Tata Altroz EV Still Under Development: Launch Pushed Further

Tata Altroz EV Still Under Development

Tata Motors is not giving up on the all-electric Altroz EV. First showcased as a concept in 2019 at the Geneva Motor Show, and later as a near-production version at the 2020 Auto Expo, the Altroz EV has remained a topic of speculation for EV enthusiasts. Internally codenamed “Ascot,” Tata has now confirmed that the electric hatchback is still very much in development—though not without its challenges.

Highlights:

  • Altroz EV codename is Ascot
  • Launch delay due to battery packaging issues
  • Will share platform with the Punch EV
  • Expected to feature up to 35kWh battery with 365km range

Why the Delay?

The primary reason for the delay is packaging constraints. Tata had initially intended to position the battery pack under the floor, but this lowered the Altroz’s ground clearance by around 20mm to 145mm. In a country like India, where ground clearance is critical due to road conditions, this proved to be a major problem.

Adjusting the ground clearance upward wasn’t an ideal solution either. Altering the stance would make the hatchback look more like a crossover, which would ruin its visual proportions. As a result, Tata paused the project and shifted focus to more feasible EVs like the Nexon EV and Punch EV.

Back in January 2024, Tata Motors’ Managing Director, Shailesh Chandra, had mentioned that the Altroz EV would launch after the Harrier EV and Sierra EV. However, it now appears the launch could be pushed beyond 2025.

Shared Architecture With Punch EV

The good news is that Tata is developing the Altroz EV on the Acti.EV architecture—the same modular platform used for the Punch EV. This architecture is expected to support better battery integration, possibly solving the earlier ground clearance issues. With the Punch EV receiving updates later this year, including potential for a larger battery pack, the Altroz EV could follow a similar route.

Based on the Punch EV’s current specs, the Altroz EV is expected to offer 25kWh and 35kWh battery options, delivering an ARAI range of 265km and 365km, respectively. Power figures are also likely to remain similar, with the electric motor producing either 82hp or 122hp depending on the variant.

Price and Positioning

While the pricing for the Altroz EV hasn’t been announced yet, it’s expected to overlap with the Punch EV, which currently ranges between ₹10 lakh and ₹14.44 lakh (ex-showroom). However, the Altroz EV is likely to attract a different buyer base—more premium urban users looking for a hatchback form factor—minimizing internal competition between Tata’s own models.

Final Thoughts

The Altroz EV might be late to the party, but it isn’t off the guest list. With the Acti.EV platform maturing and consumer demand for practical EVs growing, Tata’s all-electric premium hatchback still has a strong chance to make an impact. Now, all eyes are on Tata Motors for a revised launch timeline—hopefully in 2026.
