India’s electric car market is undergoing a major shift as customers increasingly opt for greener alternatives. The financial year 2025 (FY2025) witnessed a reshuffle in EV leadership as MG’s Windsor EV overtook Tata’s long-reigning Punch EV to become the highest-selling electric vehicle in the country.
With strong sales performance, modern features, and an affordable price under the BaaS model, the MG Windsor EV has made a powerful impact in a short span since its launch in September 2024. Let’s take a closer look at how it secured the top spot and which other EVs followed in the list.
Highlights
MG Windsor EV sold 19,394 units, surpassing Tata Punch EV
Offers up to 332 km certified range with 45kW fast charging
Tata Tiago EV and Nexon EV continue strong sales momentum
MG Comet EV rounds off the top 5 with over 10,000 units sold
MG’s Windsor EV stormed to the top of the EV charts in FY2025 with 19,394 units sold. It recently received a Pro variant with a bigger battery and extended range, boosting its appeal even further. The EV is powered by a 38kWh lithium iron phosphate battery (IP67-rated), delivering a certified range of 332 km on a single charge.
The electric motor churns out 134bhp and 220Nm of torque, while fast charging at 45kW allows 0-100% battery in just 55 minutes. Under the Battery-as-a-Service (BaaS) model, the starting price is an aggressive ₹9.99 lakh, and ₹14 lakh with battery included (ex-showroom). It also won the Green Car of the Year award at ICOTY 2025.
Once the market leader, Tata’s Punch EV slipped to the second position with 17,966 units sold. It continues to be a strong contender with its dual battery options — 25kWh and 35kWh — and versatile charging capabilities including 3.3kW and 7.2kW AC chargers and a DC fast charger.
Prices start from ₹9.99 lakh (ex-showroom), making it an accessible entry point for many EV buyers. However, the Windsor’s fresh design, longer range, and fast-charging capability gave it the winning edge this year.
3. Tata Tiago EV: Compact Segment Favorite
With 17,145 units sold in FY2025, the Tata Tiago EV claimed the third spot. It continues to be popular among budget-conscious city drivers thanks to its compact size and feature-rich cabin.
Offered in two battery options — 19.2kWh (223km range) and 24kWh (293km range) — it delivers power outputs of 60bhp and 74bhp respectively. The Tiago EV also received a minor refresh with the MY25 update earlier this year.
4. Tata Nexon EV: Holding Strong in Premium EV Segment
India’s favorite SUV in the electric avatar sold 13,978 units in FY2025. The Nexon EV is offered in two battery variants: a 30kWh model with 128bhp and 275km range, and a larger 45kWh version with 142bhp and up to 489km MIDC range.
Starting at ₹12.49 lakh (ex-showroom), the Nexon EV caters to those seeking a premium EV experience with SUV practicality.
5. MG Comet EV: City Commuter Winner
With 10,149 units sold, the MG Comet EV rounds off the top five. This quirky-looking city car is powered by a 17.3kWh battery, producing 41bhp and 110Nm of torque. It offers an ARAI-rated range of 230km and a top speed of 100km/h — ideal for urban commutes.
