Chinese Carmaker Onvo Wows Internet with AI Self-Test Show Ahead of L90 SUV Launch

Highlights:

  • Onvo’s upcoming electric SUV, the L90, is all set to launch in China on July 10
  • A viral video shows dozens of L90s doing a sci-fi-style “AI full-body self-test” called Tiantan
  • The Tiantan system reportedly checks over 1,000 car functions in just three minutes
  • The L90 will be a 3-row electric SUV with a 900V platform and prices starting under ₹36 lakh

China’s electric vehicle game just got a whole lot cooler—and a bit futuristic too. Onvo, the sub-brand of popular EV company Nio, is gearing up to launch its brand-new L90 electric SUV in China on July 10. But what really caught everyone’s eye is a recent promo video showing rows of L90s going through what looks like a robot-led dance routine. But it’s not for show—the cars are actually performing a full-blown AI diagnostic test before hitting dealerships!

Yes, you read that right. According to Shen Fei, President of Onvo, this impressive test is called the Tiantan AI Self-Test, and it happens right at the Weilei Intelligent Factory before the SUVs are shipped. The video, originally posted on Chinese social platform Weibo, shows dozens of L90s flashing their lights, opening and closing every door (even the frunk), moving their wipers, adjusting their seats, and even lowering the rear entertainment screen—all in perfect synchrony!

What’s the point of this choreographed car performance? It’s actually an extremely thorough quality control check. Onvo claims that the Tiantan system checks over 1,000 individual functions in under three minutes. That includes things humans might easily miss—like very tiny electrical or sensor faults. Thanks to the AI-powered tech, the system is said to be smarter than human inspectors, detecting things we can’t see, hear, or feel.

This Tiantan AI test was reportedly developed entirely in-house by Nio, along with the SkyOS Tianshu software that runs Onvo’s infotainment systems. It’s not yet clear whether all the diagnostics are performed using only onboard systems or with some help from external tools—but it certainly makes for some sci-fi level visuals.

Now let’s talk about the Onvo L90 itself. First shown at the Shanghai Auto Show in April 2025, the L90 is a premium, full-sized electric SUV with three rows of seating. It comes with a massive 85kWh battery, supports 900V ultra-fast charging, and will be available in both single-motor and dual-motor variants. A huge 240-litre frunk (that’s a front trunk) makes it super practical too. Inside, the traditional instrument cluster is gone—instead, you get a sleek floating screen and a head-up display (HUD) for key driving info.

What’s even more impressive is the pricing. Despite its high-end features and modern design, the L90 will be priced below RMB 300,000 (around ₹35.9 lakh before taxes), making it one of the most value-packed luxury electric SUVs coming out of China.

With the official launch just around the corner, it’ll be interesting to see how the Onvo L90 fares in the market. But if this jaw-dropping AI self-test video is anything to go by, we’re definitely in for something unique.

Stay tuned—China’s EV scene just keeps getting more exciting!
