Mercedes-AMG Pulls the Plug on Its 4-Cylinder Hybrid: Here’s What’s Coming Next!

Highlights:

  • AMG’s 680hp 4-cylinder plug-in hybrid to be phased out globally
  • New V8 engine with hybrid tech is in development
  • M139 engine deemed too costly to update for Euro 7 compliance
  • AMG to continue developing both electric and ICE performance cars

Mercedes-AMG, the performance arm of Mercedes-Benz, is saying goodbye to one of its most technically advanced engines — the 2.0-litre four-cylinder plug-in hybrid. While it looked great on paper with a whopping 680hp and 1,020Nm of torque, this powertrain didn’t quite win the hearts of traditional AMG fans. It’s currently offered in models like the C63 S E Performance (sold in India) and the GLC 63 S E Performance globally.

So, what went wrong?

Let’s just say, sometimes even the smartest engines can fall flat when it comes to driver emotion and overall experience. According to insiders, customers weren’t too happy with how the car felt or sounded. Enthusiasts missed the growl and raw feel of AMG’s iconic V8s, and on top of that, this hybrid powertrain added over 300kg of weight — making the car feel heavier and a bit less fun.

But the biggest reason for the exit? Emission rules and high costs.

Upgrading the M139 four-cylinder engine to meet the upcoming Euro 7 emission norms turned out to be a super expensive affair. While this engine is already known as the world’s most powerful four-cylinder (with 421hp in some trims), Mercedes-AMG decided that the money needed for compliance just wasn’t worth it. So, the company is now shifting its focus.

AMG is already working on a brand-new V8 engine, and yes, it’ll sound as glorious as you remember. This new V8 will be paired with modern tech like 48V mild-hybrid and plug-in hybrid systems, ensuring it meets future emissions standards while keeping that classic AMG punch alive.

In fact, we might see the updated C63 get this new V8 when it gets refreshed in 2026!

That’s not all. Inline-six engines are also making a comeback for AMG cars that don’t need full-on V8 power. Models like the A 45 S and GLC 43 Coupe — currently powered by the M139 — could be reworked to use the six-cylinder layout, or possibly phased out altogether.

AMG Isn’t Ditching EVs

Before you think AMG is going all old-school, don’t worry — the brand is just as serious about electric performance. They’ve got a full-on AMG.EA platform in the works for future EVs. The first of the lot will be the AMG GT XX (which looks wild, by the way), followed by a high-performance electric SUV.

So in short, Mercedes-AMG is adjusting its roadmap — learning from what didn’t click and going back to what fans truly love, while still embracing electrification.

Goodbye, 4-cylinder hybrid. Hello, V8 thunder and electric lightning!
